Studies on the Storage of Peach and Apricot Pollen

Abstract
This study was undertaken to find the best combination of relative humidity and temperature conducive to successful pollen storage. Various combinations of relative humidity and temperature were studied with regard to their influence on two species of fruit pollen after varying storage periods. The vitality of pollen was ascertained by germinating pollen on an artificial medium of sucrose and agar. In general, two species of pollen exhibited similar behavior. It was found for both species tested that:
1. Storage at-20¡É and 50% RH was found to tx superior to all other treatments. Pollen stored for 30 weeks under these conditions practically retained its initial germination.
2. When Pollen was stored at 1¡É, 25¡É RH was apparently the optimum RH and the pollen generally maintained 30% germination after 30 weeks of storage.
3. When pollen was stored at room temperature and 10% RH, the germination retained around 30% for 7 to 10 weeks.
